Exploring Belize: 1 month of family adventures
Belize is not the first destination that comes to mind for a warm family trip and yet, this country has so much to offer! We recently spent a month there with our three young children and were enchanted by the cultural richness, the natural beauty of the flora and fauna and the friendliness of the locals. Here is our detailed story!
Belize with family - Itinerary:
- Caye Caulker: 10 days
- San Pedro (Ambergris Caye): 14 days
- Belize City: 4 days
Belize with family - Caye Caulker
Our adventure began on the laid-back island of Caye Caulker, a little tropical paradise off the coast of Belize where the motto is: Goooo Sloooowww. That speaks to me!
What to do in Caye Caulker with your family:
💡 The Hol Chan marine reserve is accessible both for scuba diving and snorkeling, so young and old can discover these magical seabeds and swim with the friendly sharks... Yes yes! |
Being well equipped to play in the water is essential with children. Discover SlipStop water shoes to avoid injuries from too hot sand or small stones: |
- Exploring the island by bike: On the “go slow” island, the roads are made of sand and there are no motor vehicles! Rent bikes and cruise the peaceful streets of Caye Caulker. Our kids loved exploring the island by bike, stopping every now and then to taste fresh fruit or take in the spectacular views.
💡 Stop at the playground in the center of the island with the kids, and enjoy the incredible coffees and donuts at the nearby Ice and Beans restaurant ! |
- Relaxing on the docks: The beaches of Caye Caulker are few in number, it's true... But there are several options for wading!
Caye Caulker with the family: Our favorite places to swim:
1. The Lazy Lizard Grill : This restaurant is located at the end of the island, at the so-called "Split" (where the island separates in two via a canal). They have set up a section to have an aperitif with both butts in the water! It's accessible for children and lots of fun.
2. The beach at the Iguana Reef Inn Hotel : You can have access to the hotel beach and take advantage of the deckchairs and parasols while eating on site. The beach is perfect for young children with its gentle descent, calm waters and soft white sand. You can observe the rays there who meet for an aperitif around 4 p.m. every day. You can also admire the pretty little seahorses that stay in a rope installed there, near the quay. It's very impressive for children to have such proximity to marine life.
Our travel bag accompanies you on all your adventures, from the plane to the beach: |
3. In front of Ice & Beans : As mentioned above, Ice & Beans serves delicious coffee, donuts, salads... all while facing the sea where you can take a dip!
Caye Caulker with the family - Another favorite activity:
You should especially not miss the " Tarpon feeding dock ", where you can see the big tarpon jumping out of the water to catch the small fish that you hold at arm's length as bait... very impressive!
Belize with family - San Pedro (Ambergris Caye)
After enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of Caye Caulker, we took a ferry to San Pedro, the largest town on the island of Ambergris Caye. San Pedro offers a unique combination of Caribbean charm and modern infrastructure, making it an ideal destination for families!
🛌 We were staying at Sunset Ambergris Caye which we loved! A very small hotel with a very small swimming pool offering exceptional service and sublime sunset views. |
What to do in San Pedro with family:
- Exploring the island by golf cart: Ambergris Caye Island is larger, so you need to be able to transport yourself to really enjoy it. We suggest renting a car and going on an adventure!
Take it easy at the Truck Stop: A real “Beer Garden” where you can enjoy one of the many delicious meals from the food trucks on site, enjoy the swimming pool, the playground or the hammock section. .. Everything is there to have a pleasant day. Parents relax while children have fun... it's the perfect mix!
Discover Secret Beach : The not-so-secret secret beach at the end of the island is truly magnificent! We must pass through long rocky roads alongside uninhabited mangroves, to finally discover a peninsula designed for the greatest pleasure of all. Inflatable games for children, table service in the water for parents... small merchants, restaurants, bars... and a sumptuous beach perfect for swimming.
Belize with family - Belize City
Arrival and departure point, Belize City is not the most recommended place so we just passed by. We stayed close to the ferry port for a few days before returning and loved our short stay. We were staying at the Fort George Hotel & Spa and it was impeccable! There is a very beautiful park with a beautiful playground and a creamery just a stone's throw away and some nice restaurants.
To prepare luggage efficiently and quickly, consider using storage cubes: |
Belize with family - How to get around:
To get to the islands, you have to take a ferry from Belize City. On Caye Caulker, most trips can be done on foot or by bike because Caye Caulker is a very small island. There are also golf cart taxis available which pass at all times on the main roads.
In San Pedro, you can get around by taxi, golf cart or on foot. We found the golf cart to be the most convenient way to transport our family and luggage.
